It’s the light

A lovely sunny day today. We got a tram to Delft and wandered the streets of this delightful place.

When we arrived it was quiet but already there was a market set up - Antiekmarkt Curiosa - antiques/ curiosities whatever, the canal sides were lined with stalls selling old stuff. Apparently this happens every Saturday during the summer and it attracts a lot of people. It was a great atmosphere and a good place to have coffee and people watch.

We walked through all this and arrived at Vermeer House, which was excellent. I particularly liked a section where the way in which Vermeer used light was shown - very clever and I will never look at another painting in the same way again.

We eventually emerged from the Museum to find ourselves in the main marketplace and it was teeming with people, mainly sitting in the sun. Here is the square with the Nieuwe Kerk - of course Gordon found he could go up the tower . . . so he did. The New Church would have been here when Fabricius was in Delft and it is the one in his painting, but other than that it is more or less impossible to locate places, as so many changes have taken place, including of course an explosion.

But it was a lovely place to be on a sunny day nevertheless.

This evening we have joined lots of local people in a square near to the hotel to have drinks and then eat in the sunshine. Tomorrow we have an early start to get the Eurostar from Rotterdam.
