The Temple Gate
The restoration of this Category A listed Gate House was completed in 2016. As the gate no longer had a 'practical' use, it began to be referred to as a temple and simply became a decorative feature.
The gates were never really used as such because, in the 1700s, Lord Dumfries and Lord Auchinlek had a dispute about them. The houses at the Temple were occupied as late as 1933 when they were abandoned due to mining subsidence.
A long tree-lined avenue, known as the Duchess of Rothesay's Walk leads up to the very impressive Temple Gate.
Next time we visit Dumfries Estate I hope it will be a bit cooler!
