Misguided busway and cycle path
This is the cycle path next to the misguided busway. On the left is the busway itself.
You can maybe see the tracks that the buses run on. The tracks guide the bus along the road; hence, guided busway.
The route that the northern part of the busway takes used to be a railway line. There were calls to reopen said railway line instead of building the busway. A train station could be built near the science park. No, they said. We're building a busway. There's government funding for a busway because it is new and fancy and the longest of its kind. The busway costs overran by millions; the busway opened two years behind schedule; the council is involved in a lengthy legal battle with the contractors, BAM Nuttall, which is costing millions; hence, misguided busway.
See this BBC news report and the Wikipedia entry for the busway for more details.
A few more points:
1) I've noticed that normal buses tend to have this big round thing in front of the driver. I believe the driver uses this round thing to guide the bus. Guided buses also have these, which the driver uses to guide the bus at the junctions with normal roads and when they join normal roads. Very odd;
2) there's disagreement over whether the busway has achieved its aim of reducing traffic on the A14. The busway people say millions of people use the buses, but observation of the A14 suggests it's still as busy as ever. It's the lorries that are the problem, if you ask me. If only there was a way to get them off the roads, like a railway line, say. There was one that they could have reopened, but they built a busway over it;
3) now they are going to build a train station near the science park. It's rumoured the man in charge is going to be the man that was in charge of the busway. Is this one of Baldrick's cunning plans?
4) Luton is building a busway. The council have got contractors in to do it. I'm sure the fact that they're behind schedule and over budget is nothing to do with Baldrick's Luton council's choice of contractor: BAM Nuttall.
Last word: the cycle path is a good place to cycle for exercise :)
