Portmeirion Steampunk
What a completely joyous day!
We were a little undecided whether a trip to Portmeirion’s Steampunk weekend was for us. For one thing it involved actually leaving the house and heading for a major tourist honeypot - something totally against G’s principles. For another, it was likely to be very crowded and I really didn’t know whether the photo opportunities would be worth the effort.
Anyway, it’s a glorious day and any visit to Portmeirion’s is always wonderful - blue skies, the estuary views and the quirky loveliness of Clough Williams Ellis’s fantasy Italianate village. Add to that a collection of some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, dressed in amazing costumes and participating in such eccentricities as ‘Teapot Racing’ and you have a recipe for sheer, unadulterated happiness.
Everyone who’s dressed up is more than happy to pose for photos, and eager to engage in conversation about the event and their costumes. Most are either vintage or handmade from charity shop finds, often carefully curated into themes with hand embroidered designs and weird and wonderful found objects. All ages are represented, from the delightful little girl dressed as the sun with her equally astral parents, bubble guns surrounding her in iridescence and wonder, to a delightful young Icarus, to the military dressed lady who struggles to stand for photographs. So many smiles, so much colour and so much fun ….. and so many photographs!
No surprise then, that there are lots of extras today. My main is a local lady dressed in black with black and white hair - mono seems the ideal treatment
