An unexpected invitation when I checked my emails this morning, to hear a talk at Malpas Court this morning, so a hasty breakfast and straight there. S was giving a talk about Newport and its’ history, from St Woolos down into the city centre and docks. Fascinating little anecdotes about life and times, like the nineteenth century arrivals from Ireland who were destitute and starving – which is where my ancestors would have come in – and somewhere else on the scale was Thomas Prothero, Agent to Lord Tredegar and a principal coal exporter, who commissioned the building of Malpas Court. Plenty of food for thought and a warm welcome from the Probus group who meet there to hear the talks. A good opportunity to sample the café fare for lunch while I was there before heading back before the rains came to get on with some more scanning and uploading. Watched The Beautiful Game on Netflix this evening, surprised myself by being absorbed quickly into the story.
