Its the Way It Is

Baking

A cake for Poetry Circle tomorrow.

It’s a Palestinian, orange and almond cake and it’s in the oven now. It’s made with olive oil as opposed to butter and has a strong scent of vanilla from it. The smell in the house is lovely. Here is the very easy straightforward recipe and I would recommend it. I made double the mixture as the Moving Skirts Dance Group are coming to celebrate Bealtaine with us but also to dance the dabke in support of Palestine. We are also having a picnic but the weather looks dodgy. (Irish weather is very unpredictable).

I have had a busy but great week. My mammy celebrated her 100th birthday in great style last Sunday. Flowers from all over the world arrived on Saturday and gifts and cards galore. She wore a wool suit she had made for herself 35 years ago and it looked great. Quality fabric never ages. Although I had bought a dress for the occasion, I changed my mind and wore a greeny blue skirt, jacket, beret, handbag (and zipped purse inside to boot) all made by her a long time ago. We had delicious food and the hotel gifted our party a bottle of champagne. She didn’t have any as “it’s dreadful stuff” preferring a glass of apple juice. After the meal we talked about our childhood and how our Mammy was always at home. When you came home from school, if she wasn’t there, it would be very strange. She sewed everything for us (but we never appreciated it when we were young ‘uns) and always with good humour.

That was Sunday. Then on Monday I started my exams and had 3 major ones in the week. 2 more next week then finished.

I was very busy but managed to swim and have prom walk most mornings.

If you are interested, I have put the first page of The Behavioural Studies Exam as extra.

I still have Human Growth & Development on Wednesday and Criminology on Thursday and then that’s it.

For Poetry Circle, I am reading this from some months ago

And then I will also read this by Louis Mac Niece

I am very tired. The excitement and emotions of the party then many hours of study have left me a bit drained.but baking the cake is very therapeutic. I look forward to tomorrow with glee.

The Green Mile is on RTE2 at 9 tonight but I think I will be in repose. We’ll see. I just have to resist the temptation to cut a slice of the cake “just to try it”. Haha
