Snuff and Stuff

I was intrigued by this sign at Canal Head in Kendal.  Do people still buy snuff??? The Kendal Brown House,   where snuff and rolled tobacco  were produced from 1881 until 2015. The Gawith family,  as you can see from the sign, trace their tobacco rolling heritage back to 1792.  But there is scandal here.  The original tobacco man was Thomas Harrison whose daughter eloped to Gretna Green with Samuel Gawith pictured in the sign,  Her father forgave her and left his business to them.  The Gawiths still have a tobacco business in Kendal but now based  in the Mint Bridge Lakeland Business Park.  The Kendal snuff business has an interesting history which,  you can read here. No obligation of course.
One snippet is "This old formula (for Kendal Brown) is kept locked away in a bank strong room in Kendal, its secret being known by heart to only one or two of the firm's most trusted staff"
