The Man-Eating Lion

A medieval cathedral sits at the highest point of the hilltop town of Barga with a panoramic view of the valley below nestled between the Apuan Alps and Apennine Mountains. A 13th century marble pulpit just inside the entrance is supported by 4 red columns, two of which are supported by lion statues. The Lion is a symbolism of bravery, courage, strength and for Roman Catholics of the time, the Lion represented Jesus and/or ‘the Church”. Dripping with symbolism, one Lion is killing a dragon, Jesus/Faith overcomes evil. The other (featured foto) a Lion is eating a man. What does this mean? One source says Jesus/Faith overcomes heresy. Or, giving one’s life and soul to Jesus? I don’t know, but it’s some powerful imagery intended to get the message out loud and clear to parishioners of the time.
We took a bus up to Barga and strolled through the steep cobbled streets, then we exited the gates of Barga and hiked down the hill about 3 miles to the train station. A lovely hike along country roads and through a little forest..vineyards, olive groves, lots of wild flowers! Sunny and very Warm!!!! YAY!
