Detail from the absolutely massive buildings lining Karl-Marx-Allée, the parade street where the German Democratic Republic displayed to the world what a rich and prosperous country they had become under the scientific, engineering-driven German socialism.

They were, in fact, neither rich nor prosperous.

Last day in Berlin before going back north. It’s been a great time among friends, even if today ended in a sweltering 28°C. In April! I don’t want to know what madness awaits us this summer…
