Art in Bloom

Friday
Fortunately, Roger was feeling quite a bit better this morning, and was able to keep an early appointment, so when he got back we were able to go down, as planned to the Cincinnati Art Museum, to their Art in Bloom event. This is a biennial event, when floral artists, individuals or groups, create floral arrangements inspired by a work of art of their choice from the collection, and lasts four days, Thursday through Sunday. It’s a wonderful treat for the senses, both the art and the gorgeous floral displays, and my photos hardly do them justice. My selection is just a sampling, there were over 50 arrangements in total - I’m not sure we even found them all! Some of the artists were there beside their creations, explaining their inspiration and symbolism, which made things even more interesting. The museum is doing some construction at present, so I think some of their collections have been reorganized, because we came across several works we didn’t remember seeing before. One of these is the work in the top left, which was most striking, in size (almost 9 feet tall) and beauty. It is actually a new acquisition, from last year, entitled The Two sisters, and is by a contemporary African American artist, Kehinde Wiley. His renown has grown in recent years, following his commission for the official presidential portrait of Barrack Obama in 2018.
In the evening, we were out at a wonderful Cincinnati Symphony concert at Music Hall, featuring Sheku Kanneh-Mason performing Shostakovich Cello concerto No. 1, followed by Dvorak Symphony no 8. I was so thrilled to be able to see Sheku in person - what amazing talent!
So altogether a memorable day!
