Arco de Santa Catalina, Antigua, Guatemala

The Santa Catalina arch is one of the most recognised places in Antigua. Built in the 17th century, it originally connected the convent to a school allowing the nuns to pass from one building to the other without going out into the street. You can see Agua Volcano through the arch.

We enjoyed wandering Antigua. It’s a very beautiful interesting place. And lots of atmosphere. Although probably the most tourist visitors by far of all the places we’ve been to in the last month.

We ended the day with a nice dinner and then dancing in the Las Palmas to a Latin salsa band, Friends! There was a surprise performance from Ovidio Giron - he with his band Rana were a massive success in Guatemala, indeed the whole of Central America in the 1970s & 80s. The audience went crazy when he sang his popular song ‘Mi Secretaria’. Our guide Tomas was star struck. Great atmosphere. The place was jumping! An unexpected bonus was being the tallest people in the room for a change - Central Americans are quite short in height - no problems seeing everything!
