White-tailed Eagle ...

... on the Isle of Skye, off the western coast of Scotland. We took a short tour on a boat to the high cliff where this female White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) was perched. They are known in Scotland as Sea Eagles. Its male mate (probably younger) was perched less picturesquely a bit lower. (The weather was mixed--intermittent light rain to cloudy.)

The crew on our boat tossed out fish, which often entices the eagles to fly down, but they didn't today. That was frustrating, but still this image is far better than our past sightings (in Estonia, Hungary and Sweden). These eagles are large than our American bald eagles, although closely related. We are booked on another, much longer tour on Friday--a much closer view would still be possible; stay tuned.

In the afternoon, we took a long drive south and a bit west to Elgol on the coast (and back)--more superb scenery; mostly grey, but the rain held off. And after we returned home to Portree, we saw Andy Murray, Scotland's pride, close out a victory in the fifth set to advance to the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
