Cross Bones
A gate tied with ribbons and totems on Redcross Way, the site of Cross Bones, a medieval pauper's graveyard. There is an on-going wrangle between planners, London Underground (the owners) and locals who want it to remain partially as a graveyard and garden.
A plaque on the gate reads
Cross Bones
Graveyard
In Medieval times this was an unconsecrated
graveyard for prostitutes or 'Winchester Geese'.
By the 18th century it had become a paupers'
burial ground, which closed in 1853.
Here, local people have created
a memorial shrine.
