Crossing the water

I actually make it to RSPB Conwy today - a short but very pleasant walk. I’m hoping to see the resident pair of grebes in mating dance, but they’re too far away for decent photos and but for a brief effort to face each other and coordinate a few head movements, they seem to give up, skirting one another laconically, heads low and tucked close, almost sleeping.

It’s with much relief, then, that I spot the ponies, unusually away from normal grazing grounds.  It’s not that rare to see them grazing by the water, but today a group of three have decided to explore the islands of the lagoon. One hesitates before tentatively crossing to the first island, another decides it’s all too much and stays on the shore. But this one tackles the small channel with aplomb, a brief canter taking her across, mane and tail caught in the breeze.
