Solheimajokull

Iceland day 3 - our second full day tour involved several spectacular waterfalls, black beaches, basalt columns, clifftop views over dramatic landscapes and a morning spent hiking on Solheimajokull, which is part of one of the largest glaciers in the country, Myrdalsjokull.

Definitely the highlight of a holiday full of highlights. We’ve always wanted to visit a glacier and it did not disappoint. Our guide Christina was superb. Knowledgeable about the glacial environment and the challenges it faces, she is also part of the mountain rescue team so we felt very safe in her care. Must be over 30 years since we have used crampons but we soon got the hang of them again. Thankfully our ice axes weren’t needed for anything other than posing.

Christina took this pic of us through this rapidly melting ice bridge. Strange to think it will have vanished within the next week or so.

We returned to our hotel exhausted 12.5 hours after we left. A long rewarding day that we will remember forever.
