I’ve never had much time for spy stories and I was underwhelmed by Le Carre when I tried him. But a friend was so persuasive that I started the first of the Alec Milius stories, and I was hooked. I’m not sure why. The hero is a self absorbed, thoroughly unlikeable young man without morals. Part of the fascination I think is that a spy can’t tell anyone, not their family, not their life partner, what they do or that they have a second, secret life. Hard to imagine, but fascinating. So I have started on the second in the series…
