St Peter's Anglican Church
St Peter's Anglican Church is just down the highway in the next suburb, also called St Peters. Built in 1838 and designed by Thomas Bird in the early gothic revival style, it is one of the oldest churches in Sydney and is heritage listed. Originally it had a spire and a bell chamber but they were removed in 1963, accounting for its slightly 'something's missing' look.
The church is situated on a big piece of land by inner west Sydney standards. A large proportion of this land is taken up by a cemetery, with the first burial, of a soldier, taking place in 1838. The last one, of a widow, was in 1896.
I've often wandered around the cemetary and have even blipped some of the gravestones. It's a peaceful place, an urban oasis in which one can be oblivious to the traffic roaring by on the super busy highway which fronts the estate.
A cute thing in the grounds is one of those tiny public book swapping libraries (see extra). It too could be gothic revival. I checked out the books and they are regular, not religious.
