Hardscape

What is it about stone, that we love on houses and buildings? Is it the old world look, the random and rough texture, the color or all of the above?
I am attracted to stone and love the look of buildings in Europe and oversees - as well as houses / buildings in USA with stone as one of the mixed textures. Not sure if I know why it appeals to me but I find it beautiful.
