Look out!
This is a sign by a woodland path up at Thorpeness. We have good signs in Suffolk.
I like adders, me. They come out on the first sunny day of spring with the intention of coiling up and heating up a bit on the warm sandy paths - and if you disturb them they uncoil reluctantly and slide off, hissing with irritation.
Last summer, I went walking from Dunwick to Walberswick with my sister-in-law, along sandy brackeny paths.
"Just as well its a bit late in the year," I tell her. "We get lots of adders May June time.
She's never seen an adder, and is intrigued - so I describe one.
A bit later she asks, "What did you say they look like?"
"Pretty much like that one right by your foot!"
And it was!
