London Bridge, Torquay

Enjoyed a boat trip round the bay tonight to raise funds for the Friends of Brixham Library, of which I am a proud member, and ultimately the library. Together with good librarianship it all helps to keep it afloat.

London Bridge was originally part of the ocean floor. Flat layers of rocks and sediment built up and then, as a result of the continental drift and all the folding and faulting during the carboniferous period, these layers were pushed up so that they were almost vertical. Certain layers that were weaker have eroded and fallen away, leaving the harder layers of rock to form the bridge. In time the top section will fall away leaving two stacks. Often photographed and painted.
