A giant horsetail

The photo doesn't do it justice. Something to suggest scale would have helped! It's a bit other worldly. Some stems a mahogany brown, almost polished.

Collected on today's walk, but it will go in the fire. Dangerous stuff if it got into the garden....
but then I read that it is sold as a marginal plant for ponds. 
Need more info.
