In the mountains
Bosnia & Herzegovina really is one of the most beautiful countries in the world - even if it does have a dark history, even if its name is too much of a mouthful so that most people just call it Bosnia.
Had a wee run in the morning - same route we walked to and over the bridge yesterday - then after breakfast it was back in the bus (air con appreciated as the first couple of days were hot) to Sutjeska National Park.
Checked into the hotel then out in another bus - rather less salubrious but more able to cope with the steep unpaved roads in the national park. Well, that was the theory - it wouldn't go into first gear and ground to a halt on a steep hill. Fortunately another bus was following, on its way to pick up a group, we all got in that one and ours coped when it wasn't full of people.
Had lunch at a nice shelter at the edge of the forest. Well, nice until the large and voracious local mosquitoes found us and started having their lunch...
The walk started through forest, continued across meadows with wild flowers and butterflies in profusion. We were warned about snakes and ticks and did see a snake - a very small one but the diamonds on its back suggested it could inflict harm if it so chose.
Past some small lakes and up to a grassy ridge and rocky top. This was Ugljesin (1858m), a wonderful spot for viewing the surrounding peaks including Maglic, the highest in Bosnia (of which more later). Here's the view along the ridge.
There was also a swallowtail butterfly on top.
