Plumed Basilisk, Costa Rica
We’ve been staying in a lovely place in Puerto Viejo Sarapiqui. The hotel is set in fabulous extensive jungle grounds next to a river. It’s also an archaeological site for some of the original indigenous peoples of Costa Rica - they’ve uncovered funeral remains and bases of dwellings.
We’ve seen lots of wildlife again today including colourful frogs, toucans, vultures and iguanas. The Plumed Basilisk is a species of lizard. The males have a distinct crest on their back and tail and large plumes on top of their heads. It’s unique in its ability to run across water at speed hence its common name of the Jesus Christ Lizard!
