60 Years Ago Today

The final services on the line from Melton Constable, through Holt to Sheringham ran on 6th April 1964, so I obviously had to post a steam train photo to mark the anniversary of the line closure. The line had survived the closure of the majority of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway network in 1959, but didn't survive the Beeching Report in 1963 due to falling passenger numbers making it uneconomical.

My main photo is of Hercules, a very impressive visiting engine which is 104 years old. I've also posted an extra of some 'steamy wheels' and another of the Heritage Diesel arriving with it's home made sign of the anniversary, passing Hercules which would shortly depart. An amazing effort goes into keeping the heritage railways running, not least the work of all the volunteers and the financial contribution from visitors and often from the National Lottery. Well done to all concerned. 

I watched Scoop this afternoon, the Netflix drama about the making of the Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew, which I thought was well done. A very warm albeit windy day, reaching 20C this afternoon. No coat needed this morning!
