Bolsover

On our way to S,N & M for a couple of days' break.  Stopped off at Bolsover Castle - somewhere we'd stopped at before but too near to closing time to be let in.  We'd no expectations - just somewhere to pause a journey.

It's a bizarre place - a "fantasy hilltop pleasure palace of a horse-mad Cavalier playboy" - English Heritage's words.  

It wasn't even really lived in, it was just a play house in the 17th Century for parties and showing off to kings and such.  Some 17th C wall paintings in impressive condition.
