Barn Owl...
Mike, Barn Owl Bob & I were ringing barn owl chicks today & taking measurements of wing size, weight etc for conservation purposes. Bob is licensed to do this & knows how to handle the birds minimising the stress to them. These wonderful birds should only be handled by people that know what they are doing, so if in doubt call the RSPB they will know who to send out if you come across a nest or an injured bird.
We ringed 5 owl chicks all together, spotted 4 adult barn owls & in one of the nests the barn owl chicks were just hatching. There were quite a lot of nest sites not in use this year. It must have been a very hard winter for the owls. We also ringed 5 spotted fly catcher chicks, which was fun. As they like to nest in open front nest boxes I had to stay at the nest for about 20 minutes to make sure they settled after being ringed, I got eaten alive by midges. It was worth it though, they were so cute.
Hope you had a good weekend. I will try & catch up with commenting at some point. Thank you for sticking with me.
