tempus fugit

Our avenue of ash trees is gradually falling victim to ash dieback disease.  A few  more of them have had to come down before they drop their branches on people and vehicles passing below.

I've been trying to count the annual rings. I know they aren't very old because when we came here 30 years ago our eighty-year old neighbour at the time remarked, disapprovingly, that there never used to be trees along the lane.

I've counted about 70 rings which means the trees must have been planted in the 1960s. It figures, because the place stopped being a working family farm in the 50s and most of its land was sold. It went through a series of uses, disparagingly called 'hobby farming' by our neighbour. At least we can congratulate ourselves on planting a new woodland of 600+ mixed trees, even if most are only a few inches high at present. They don't include ash.
