The White Horse of Cherhill

After a day of largely laying in a horizontal position waiting for my limbs to start working again, I took the scenic route back to London.

Cherhill is the second oldest of the Wiltshire horses, it was designed and made in 1780 by Dr Christopher Alsop of Calne. Referred to as 'The Mad Doctor', he is said to have directed the marking out of the horse from a distance using a megaphone (doen't sound at all mad to me).

Dr Alsop was also a friend of Stubbs, which might have explained part of his motivation, although cutting shapes of horses into hillsides seems to be a fashionable thing to do at this time.
