Departed polecat

Visiting friends today at their new house and we started the day with a walk.
Found this unfortunate beast on the margin of a crop-less field. No obvious signs of injury or shot and we wondered if it had eaten rat poison or something similar.
Would have been a handsome animal and I was surprised that we had polecats in rural Essex.
