STRAW-PLAIT

Straw-plait - introduced to Orkney in the early 19th century to supply the straw bonnet industry when foreign straw-work was unobtainable through war.  Hundreds of Orkney women were employed at straw-plaiting.
Specimens of this industry were sent to the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition, and were awarded a Bronze Medal. (Extra)
