Trafalgar Square

It's been a pretty dreadful day weather-wise - strong winds and heavy rain - so I'm posting a photo I took in London yesterday. Trafalgar Square presents an iconic image of London and it's not easy to capture a different view but I thought the sky offered a dramatic background to  Nelson's Column. Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson was 47 when he was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805 and became a national hero. His flagship, Victory, is at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and it's really interesting to go round it and see how the conditions were for the crew. Nelson's tomb is in St Paul's Cathedral and the column was constructed between 1840 and 1843 . It is 169 feet tall to the top of the Admiral's hat. The four lions at each corner of the pedestal on which the column stands were added in 1867. The square has been a gathering place, or destination, for demonstrations for years.
