A day out in Rostock

After a very basic, and excessively expensive breakfast, we drove in to Rostock.

Parked up in a car park by the river, and walked up into the old town.  Where we found ourselves in the midst of an Easter Market.

We were very lucky with the weather, bright, often sunny, though with a rather sharp wind.

Our first stop was a market stall to buy a carpet beater.  We also bought a rather nice olive wood soap dish.  We had to find a cash machine before we could collect the purchases, as we hadn't brought our Euros (and even if we had, I suspect we weren't in possession of enough ready cash - cards are so commonly accepted these days).

After that, we popped in to the Tourist information, and picked up a map and a few suggestions regarding things to see.

We walked first to Marienkirche, where we paid our €2.50 each and found ourselves in a Lutheran church that could easily have passed as a Roman Catholic church.  Of course, that was what it was built as, back in the 13th Century.  But my experience suggests that the Lutherans have got rid of much of the ornamentation.

First extra is the nave, with the highly ornamented altar and pulpit.  Second extra is the astronomical clock.  We were able to watch at 12 midday, as the apostles processed around Christ, disappearing through a door, except that it slams shut in the face of Judas! (3rd and 4th extras)

Afterwards, we had coffee and cake in a little community cafe.

Then we returned down the main street to visit the cultural museum, located in an old monastery, before walking down to the old city gate (Kröpeliner Tor) that is featured in the main blip.

We had a late lunch in a restaurant in a cellar, popped in to Edeka to buy snacks, and most importantly, some plastic cups so we can drink the wine we bought on the boat yesterday! 

Now back at our hotel - we shall forgo the €14 per person breakfast tomorrow morning, pack our few bits and head off early, aiming to stop at an out of town cafe on our drive to the next hotel.
