How does this lovely thing grow out of a brick?

Spent the day decluttering and gardening, making a little impact on both. The decluttering is always full of memories and sometimes sadness. I went through some of my dad’s things and kept a few treasures.  He died 35 years ago, but my mum never looked at his belongings - so I’ve got his as well as hers to go through
Portia enjoyed having me in the garden - she ran around, got in the way, dug where I was digging:) All I really did was clear away weeds and ivy from under the apple tree and put down some food and compost for it. It has wonderful Cox apples, but didn’t do so well last year. Hope some tlc will help.
