Twayblade

This is our most under-valued orchid. It is easily the commonest in the UK and is very easy to identify, with its two opposite rounded leaves. Because the flowers are small and green, I think it is rather ignored in favour of more exotic and colourful orchids. However, the little manikin-like flowers are just as fascinating as other orchids if you bother to get up close. And it is just as interesting biologically, with a highly intricate mechanism for achieving pollination by small insects, involving explosive pollinia.
