The Netherlands... its water and its land

A scene we see lots in the West of our country the Netherlands... that is the water runs in higher beds than the neighbouring land is; what is the polder. You can tell that the land is lower than the riverlet from the houses that are built on the land there.
 And the polder is land from which the water is pumped out into the neighbouring river what's flowing between manmade dykes.
