... but by the afternoon the rain had returned.
This is an example of a gushet building i.e. a pointed building between two converging roads (think of the Flatiron Building in New York). It dates from c.1879. The junction is known as St Andrew's Cross as it looks like a saltire from the air (check for this on the geotag), also known as Eglinton Toll. The building has a rooftop garden which was originally for drying clothes as there is no ground level garden space.
To the left and right of the building can be see the blue deck of the M74 motorway.
