The Windrush Monument

I saw this beautiful bronze statue by Basil Watson as I passed through Waterloo Station on my way to Tate Modern this morning. The statue pays tribute to the Windrush pioneers who came from the Caribbean to help rebuild Britain after the Second World War. The ship carrying them from the Caribbean was called the Empire Windrush and arrived in Britain in 1948. The statue is at Waterloo as many of the new arrivals passed through this station on their way to start their new lives across the country.
