Dead lugs

These are the fruiting bodies of the fungus Auricularia auricula-judae, commonly known as jelly ears or, hereabouts as jelly lugs. They make their living by breaking down dead wood.
Eventually the lugs too must die, as here, to be broken down by other fungi and bacteria.
The intricate detail is best viewed large on a black background.
