Clinging on

The island of Phu Quoc is modernising at a fast pace, with huge tourist developments in the south and international flights from India, Thailand, Korea and other places every day.

In the north and east of the island the traditional way of life is clinging on; families still live in open-sided houses and sleep in hammocks, smallholdings are scattered among the mangroves and forests, and fisherman still ply their trade from small boats in the shallow waters.

How long will they be able to carry on?
