Hoping not to get skunked tonight

Cribbage is an interesting game with interesting terminology.
For example, if one player makes it to the end hole before the other player gets around the bend it is called “being skunked” and the winner scores 2 points instead of one point.
On the other hand, if the game is close and the winner gets to the end while the other player is just one hole away it is called “being in the stink hole.” No extra points allotted.
Whoever made up this game clearly thought that losing really stunk!
