Vancouver Anachronisms

l. Now that ‘snail mail’ is almost a thing of the past, the old, city blocked sized Post Office has become obsolete. This valuable property, in the very heart of downtown, was bought by one of the few companies that could afford to purchase it…surprise, surprise (!), Amazon! This gigantic, three (large) story building was tripled in volume. This very large plaque, 6 meter tall, is all that remains to indicate that past purpose of the building.
That…and the very clever new name the the building..’The Post’.

c. The Dominion Building, located it what was the original centre of the city, at 53 meters was the tallest building in the British Empire when it opened in 1909.
Originally the headquarters of a daily newspaper, it is still a well used office building.

r. One of the oldest and most recognizable buildings on the Vancouver skyline, the Sun Building, built in 1912 as the headquarters of a daily newspaper. It replaced the Dominion Building as the tallest building west of Toronto. It is famous for its fake, green copper dome, which is now actually real copper and has not had time to turn green. It is also noteworthy for its 12 naked ‘Muses’ (made in Shropshire, I am told). Several are visible if you look closely. The building was too small for the Sun by the ‘60’s and the paper has moved twice since, and is now owned by a national news conglomerate and is a mere shadow of its former self.

Bonus anachronism- note to black sign in tha center blip. Pappas Furs was once a rival to The Hudson Bay Co. The were are world wide distributor of Canadian furs from the Arctic. They closed permanently in 2014.
