Cook Out - Harrison Ward
I reviewed this book about cooking real meals whilst backpacking for Vertebrate press today on Amazon and Goodreads.
Hurray! For once here is an author extolling the pleasures of being in the Fells and taking responsibility not only for his own well-being but for that of the environment as well. His emphatic instruction concerning taking home every scrap of rubbish (even onion skins) and the care that needs to be taken with fire so that it never scorches or burns the cooking site was exemplary. I wish more 'outdoor authors would take a leaf out of his book.
Colleagues and I have spent too many hours by beautiful streams and Lakes, trying to re-instate their green banks pockmarked with rings of charcoal, multiple piles of blackened stones with half burned rubbish, saucepan rings of dead grass, and with Volunteers collect bagfuls of picnic plastics. I found it tremendously uplifting to find a book so clearly stating the expectations of how we treat our environment and shared spaces, whilst looking after our own health and the enjoying the preparation and eating of real meals.
And talking of that, a book that explains how to prepare, carry utensils, stove and ingredients to cook such delights as Louisiana Gumbo, Tuscan Bean Stew, Sausage and Fennel Tagliatelli or Cumbrian Cassolette on the top of Scafell is definitely a winner in my opinion.
