Tuesday: The Commandments

Belize is a curious country.  

Deeply religious, yet with very high instances of murder, domestic violence, gender-based violence, and child abuse.  A lot of the churches here are funded from the US and actively campaign against LGBTQ rights.  As an example, there is an Equal Opportunities Bill on the table here, which covers gender, disability, indigenous rights etc yet it won’t pass because it also covers LGBTQ rights.   Those with the power to implement change would rather hold back progress across the board, rather than allow one group to enjoy equal rights. 

This sign is right outside our supermarket and is a daily reminder of how religion filters into everyday life.  A better sign to have up would be: ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’.
