No Bees Knees

I spotted these fox gloves on my way out to do my recycling but I'd forgotten my phone so couldn't take a picture. Luckily my recycling pile was so massive that I had to make two trips so I got my blip after all.

The second time I passed there was a bumble bee going about his, or rather her I suppose, business in one of the flowers so I'd hoped to get a photo of her hairy back end hanging out. However, she'd finished and buzzed off by the time I got organised. Dag nabbit! She probably wanted to get in out of the rain.

He? She? I'm all confused now. The drones are the males aren't they? They don't do much except for mating. Are all the workers then female? According to a quick Google search they are.

Phew! Glad I got that sorted out.
