The Selfish Giant
Monday is often the day I catch a film with my sister, today it was “Fallen Leaves”, a lovely, funny Finnish film about loneliness and love, music and movies, with a really muted mid century vibe. We were the only ones in the cinema, which seemed somehow appropriate, especially as leaves are almost falling here. I saw lots of trees on the turn on my bus ride in.
Canberra’s Palace (our go-to cinema) is located in the one time wannabe cool precinct where I used to work. Always good for a photo, and I was very excited by today’s mono theme of texture. This is “Modern Man” by Tim Kyle. The subject, standing in a bed of untamed cactus and fennel, with a skyscraper looming behind, brings to mind a churlish note in our apartment elevator asking parents to keep their children out of the garden (unless supervised). It was clumsily expressed and I couldn’t help but think of Oscar Wilde’s “Selfish Giant”.
The extra is another public sculpture I can never resist trying to capture, even though I know long panos don’t usually work well on blip! In Spring it’s covered in wisteria but my photo of that didn’t garner me a place in my workplace’s wallpaper photo comp either!
