The old town square
Two days solo here is long enough. After yesterday’s lengthy sand dune walk I took it easy, striding out in the opposite direction to the nature reserve where in shelter of the wind the salty inlet was like a millpond and the temperature rose quite a few degrees. I spotted several turn stones and a bold egret that seemed oblivious to me eating my picnic lunch just a few metres away.
Inexplicably there was a dog beach area next to reserve. Needless to say the dogs were unaware of the dividing line, and several found their way to my hide from the wind shelter. They must like cheese.
The blip is the very blue town square I walked through earlier in the morning, the only bit that’s really left of old Corralejo. Local folk drinking coffee most accompanied by dogs, and several small children doing skilful things in the play area.
The defining feature of this island is the wind, the reason why I have left until now to visit. Having lived for several decades in the windiest part of Kintyre I had no wish to have more of the same on vacation. The walking has been idyllic, and I’ve explored some really unspoilt areas, for me it’s not a destination for flying and flopping. And the mosquitos are formidable which is strange because I have a friend who always goes to Gran Canaria, which is pretty close, because she has a strong reaction to insect bites.
