Bananas

We left our little cottage and the west coast to drive back to our sister in laws house east of Faro.
We had an outing in the afternoon to a local botanic garden with a brilliant guided tour. The aims of the garden and the owner were to test and grow fruits and vegetables from other countries to see what could survive here. With a view to the effects of climate change and also the dependence of this area on their orange trees, he hopes to find ways to introduce more diversity into the crops.
In just 4 years he had an amazing array of trees and fruit, and was discovering what worked well, and what was unsuitable, or too needy for this part of the country. My SIL and house partners came away totally inspired with lots of ideas for plans for their own plot of land here. MrKT and I were equally inspired, but sadly Scotland is a totally different climate! Probably won’t get bananas in our back garden, but may be able to take away some of the principles of planting that were being used.
