Trout

Two of the six rainbow trout (each weighing over 2lb) that I caught this morning, at Ravensnest Fishery near Tintern Abbey. It's a beautiful little spot, three ponds cut as terracing into a hillside stream, the higher ponds overflowing into the lower ones, so the fish are always in running water and they grow very muscular, and hence are extremely tasty. In the afternoon I smoked all six of them and distributed them to friends.

I also learnt a lot about trying to shoot still-life photos involving fresh fish. Lesson (1): fish are extremely slippery and won't hold position, slithering out of place just as you get them all lined up; lesson (2) fish slime and cameras don't mix very well.

I guess if someone had a video camera running it would have made quite funny viewing, watching me try to catch slippery dead fish from slithering all over the kitchen, and then having to wipe gallons of fish slime off of all the kitchen surfaces, the kitchen floor, and the DSLR and its lens.
