Catastrophe

The Hartley Pit Memorial stands in the churchyard of St. Albans church in Earsdon, North Tyneside.

It commemorates the loss of 204 miners in 1862 when the engine beam broke at Hartley Pit.

Some of the miners who were lost were children, 11 years old.
