Leonard and Arthur

I was up by the Commonwealth Pool Leisure Centre at lunchtime. The morning rain had given way to brighter skies.

The building - mid-19th century baronial style - is St Leonard’s Hall. It was built for a publishing family and underwent various roles before becoming the administrative offices of the Accommodation services of Edinburgh University. It is located in the University’s Pollock Halls of Residence.

The name comes from the area in which it is located: St Leonard’s is named after a medieval hospital which used to be located there. St Leonard’s nowadays is more associated with the local police station which bears the name.

The hill in the background is Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano. The origin’s of the name are not clear, with myths about King Arthur thrown into the mix.
